Kwame retains Accra Open Golf trophy

ACCRA, October 25 -- Emmanuel Mensah Kwame retained the Accra Open Golf championship trophy when he scored 147 gross to win the competition played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday. E. K. Osei was second with 150 gross, Nick Smallman placed third with 151 gross, Francis Agbemor took the fourth position with 153 gross while John Missewou came fifth with 154 gross.

Mona Captan captured the Ladies event with 164 gross, while second position went to Suzie Abaloo with 168 gross with Florence Etwi-Barimah and Francisca Vandyck placing third and fourth with a gross of 169 and 174 respectively.

In the Handicap event, Mike Aggrey returned 145 net to win the competition beating Oti Boateng on countback. The third spot went to Fred Asamani with 146 net while Bashiru Sakibu came fourth with 146 net.

The Ladies handicap trophy went to Mary Balmond with 137 net, Esther Quartey came second with 139 net while Ama Morgan took the third position with 142 net.

Emos Korblah won the Professionals event with 212 gross, Victor Brave-Mensah took the second position with 213 gross, the third spot was shared by Anthony Amuzu and Robert Degbe with 218 gross while Yao Daniels took the fifth spot.

Distillers Corporation of South Africa and CAL Merchant Bank sponsored the two-day 36-hole scratch event opened to amateur and professional golfers from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

Minister of Tourism Mike Gizo, in an address read for him, called on the Ghana Golf Association to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to find a way of promoting tourism through sports. He said if this is properly done it would go a long way to boost sports development in the country.

Nana Atta Nyamekye, Captain of the Achimota golf Club, praised the sponsors for their contribution towards the development of the sport and called on other corporate bodies to help popularise the game in the country.
