Head coach of the Sudanese national team, James Kwasi Appiah, has opened up about how he handled squad selection when he was leading the Black Stars.

He stated that he is not a coach who could be influenced to select a particular player because an authority instructed him to do so.

Appiah went on to indicate that when he was the Black Stars coach, there were times when some members of the GFA and Black Stars management committee would suggest changing some players. However, he did not succumb to the pressure.

Speaking on the BKB show, the now head coach of Sudan noted that his determination to stick to his ideas without influence helped him to survive and excel.

“There should never be a situation where even the president of the nation will ask me to select a particular player because the person is related to him, and I will heed. If I do that, he will even know that I don’t know my job, so it does not work for me. They [GFA] never told me to select a particular player.

“Randy and all those guys knew I am not that type of person. On several occasions, when we go for management meetings and I present the squad, they would suggest I take some players out and replace them with others, but in the end, I will not change even one player,” he said in Twi during an interview with Bright Kankam Boadu.

Kwasi Appiah led the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but unfortunately, the team exited at the group stage.
