Black Stars goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has told Ghanaians that firing coach Kwesi Appiah does not guarantee success for the team.

The country has been on an elusive search for a fifth AFCON trophy since annexing the fourth one in 1982.

Earlier this year, Kwesi Appiah led 23 players into the Africa Cup of Nations with a vow to end the wait for the coveted trophy.

It, however, turned out to be Ghana’s worst performance in the last six editions of the tournament with the country exiting at the round of 16 stage.

The below-par performance from the side has largely been blamed on Kwesi Appiah who according to critics has failed to create a winnable side since taking over the team two years ago.

His contract with the Stars is set to expire at the end of the month with the new GFA administration reportedly unwilling to offer him a new contract.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s Sports Check programme, Fatau Dauda urged Ghanaians to believe in Kwesi Appiah and give him another chance.

Fatau said that hiring and sacking of coaches will not end Ghana’s AFCON hunger but rather a belief in a coach whose competence has repeatedly been questioned by connoisseurs of the game.

“I keep on saying let’s love our own. It’s about believing in our coaches. In football, sometimes you win, lose or draw so let’s keep believing. So if another coach comes and we don’t win trophies, what happens?”
