Kwesi Appiah has two games to save his job – GFA Exco member

An Executive Committee member of the Ghana Football Association has debunked media rumors which seem to suggest that the new FA boss Kirt Okraku and his Executive Council members have assured Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah that his current contract will be extended.

The council on Monday held its first meeting with the coach after which they assured of him of their unflinching support for the upcoming 2021 AFCON qualifiers.

A section of the media interpreted the move to be a declaration of an intention to offer Kwesi Appiah a new deal beyond the current one which expires in December.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s morning show, Oduro Sarfo explained that the Council’s decision was meant to diffuse rumours that the Kurt Okraku led administration is bent on firing Kwesi Appiah.

He said that a definite decision on Appiah’s future will be taken after the AFCON qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome in November.

He also added that public sentiment will gauged before firing Kwesi Appiah or offering him a new deal.

“We spoke with Kwesi Appiah to find out his problems and how we can help him ahead of the Black Stars games. We did not speak about new contract or sacking him. He still has two months to go so we assured him of our support. After the two games, we will sit down and decide whether to give him a new deal or not”, he said.

The Berekum Chelsea chief also revealed that the decision to appoint CK Akunnor as assistant coach of the Black Stars was taken by the outgoing Normalization Committee.

Akunnor was on Tuesday confirmed as Kwesi Appiah’s deputy, bringing an end to weeks of speculations.

"The new Ghana Football Association didn't appoint CK Akonnor as assistant coach of the Black Stars. The plan was already there before we came."
