The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s ace radio sports commentator, Joe Tetteh-Coffie, is dead. He met his sudden death through a motor accident at Amasaman (outskirt of Accra) while returning from the Asante Kotoko-Santos of South Africa Cup Winners Cup second leg match in Kumasi last Sunday.

Cofie was among four soccer fans who reportedly died on the spot on Sunday night when their Ford Wagon van collided head-on with a seven-tonner container truck, apparently due to a tyre burst. Sources close to the GBC Radio Sports Department on Monday confirmed the tragic event and said the body of the 44-year old commentator had been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary in Accra.

Joe Tetteh-Cofie was at his exciting best during the Kotoko-Santos F/C continental match as shouted what was to be his last when Kotoko pulled the equalizer in the difficult match with less than ten minutes left for play. Until the unexpected happened, Cofie, a native of Krachi-Nkwanta in the Volta Region, was a Senior Programmes Organiser at the GBC.

This is the second time in nine days that tragedy has hit the soccer fraternity in the country. On Friday 21 April, Referee P.S Okai, who was on a fitness test after a referees course collapsed at the Accra Sports Stadium. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Police Hospital where he was rushed.
