League start delay cause of Ghanaian clubs’ poor show in Africa – Albert Commey

An Executive Committee member of the Ghana FA, Albert Commey Aryeetey has attributed the early exit of the country’s representatives in this year’s Caf inter-club competitions to the late start of the domestic season.

League title holders Wa All Stars and FA Cup winners Bechem United were both kicked out of the Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup preliminary round respectively by 5-1 aggregate margins over the weekend.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Abusua FM Monday, Commey Aryeetey indicated that until the local is fixed to start on time, clubs who qualify for the African inter-club competitions would continue to suffer premature exit.

According to him, the problem is not about the quality of the country’s reps.

”We need to do something to help our local league. It isn’t that our league is that bad but the truth of the matter is that we don’t start our league early and it is something that in my view is affecting our clubs who participate in both the Champions League and the Confederation Cup.”

”For me, I think the stakeholders are not helping at all in improving the level of our league. It is unfortunate that when you go to social media you only see the negative aspect of our league that is reported there but genuinely I think our clubs are not doing that bad just that they need to improve their play.

“If the various stakeholders will help us to start the league on time, clubs will prepare well by playing a couple of matches to test their team’s strength but here is the case our clubs are participating in African without kicking a ball in league,” Commey who doubles as the CEO of Aduana Stars bemoaned.

Ghana used to have two slots in each of the Caf inter-club competitions but the continuous non-performance of its representatives saw it halved about two years ago.
