Portuguese central defender Pepe has announced his retirement from professional football after an illustrious career with the national team and several top European clubs.

Pepe, who played for European giants Real Madrid and FC Porto, won 34 trophies, leading his teams to major titles.

During his time at Real Madrid, he played a crucial role in winning three UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies.

The Portuguese center-back made 141 appearances for the national team and was instrumental in helping Portugal win their first European Championship (EURO)

in 2016.

In a video shared online, Pepe expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his career, including teammates and colleagues.

"I can't help but thank all the presidents who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to perform my work. To all the employees of the clubs I've been part of, who are the soul and essence of the clubs and the national team, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks and a hug of gratitude to all of you," Pepe said, as quoted by bbc.com.

Reacting to the news, his teammate and Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, shared on social media, "No words can express how much you mean to me, my friend. We won everything there was to win on the field, but the greatest achievement is the friendship and respect I have for you. You are unique, my brother. Thank you for so much."

One of his iconic moments includes his aggressive tackles on former Barcelona star Lionel Messi during El Clásico matches.
