Heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis, arrived in Accra Thursday for a ten-day visit to Ghana.
The world champion, who was accompanied by his mother Violet Blake and Emmanuel Steward one of the most influential personality in the boxing industry, told newsmen that he was happy to be in the country, which he described as, "the land of my roots."
Lewis said while in the country, he would attend the engagement of a bosom friend, and would also celebrate his 37tth birthday.
The world champion thanked his numerous fans in the country for their support during his last fight with Iron Mike Tyson and said he had prowess in him to demonstrate to the world.
He said, "The world has not seen the best of me yet," and denied speculations that there would be re-bout between him and Tyson., adding that the public is not interested in the fight between the two of them again.
Whilst in the country Lewis would call on President John Agyekum Kufuor and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and would visit Elmina and Cape Coast.
It is not too clear whether Lewis came together with the man described as the most controversial boxing promoter in the world, Don King. Dong King says he is in town to relax and savour Ghanaian hospitality and make champions of some of the country’s promising boxers.
He arrived in Accra aboard a Ghana Airways aircraft with a four-man crew and still sporting the aura of a monarch. He told journalists that he is here at the invitation of his Ghanaian friend, Prince Poku, to be part of the celebration of Lenox Lewis’ 37th birthday, meet boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, his good old pal John Kermah of Ringcraft Promotions Syndicate fame, as well as explore other opportunities aimed at giving Ghana boxing a new lease of life.
“I’m happy to be here in Ghana, one of the foremost African countries. Ghana is on the move and I feel good to be here. The only place to be now is Accra and Trasaco Valley”, King said, referring to the plush East Legon estate where the WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion would throw a birthday party on Monday.
The 70-year old man made legends out of such pugilists as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad and Ghana’s Azumah. He also promoted former world champion, Nana Yaw Konadu and currently has welterweight Jantuah in his stable.
