Lionel Messi's dad confirmed dead

Jorge Messi, the father of Argentina and Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 following a prolonged illness, according to the footballer’s family.

Jorge passed away on Friday night, August 7, 2026, at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina, where he had spent his final months receiving treatment.

His family said he had been moving between the clinic and his home, where he was supported by his wife Celia and their children Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol.

The death comes weeks after Lionel spent time with his father following the 2026 World Cup before returning to the United States to resume his career with Inter Miami.

Jorge played an important role in his son’s extraordinary football journey, supporting Lionel from his childhood and remaining closely involved as his career developed at Barcelona and beyond. He also represented his son professionally for several years.

Reflecting on their relationship, Messi once revealed how much his father’s opinion meant to him.

“I always needed my dad’s approval, ever since I was a kid. After every match, I’d ask him what he thought of how I played,” Messi said.

Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Messi began his football journey, also mourned Jorge, highlighting the role he played behind the scenes in his son’s rise.

“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel,” the club said.

Concerns over Jorge’s health emerged during the World Cup after Messi became emotional following Argentina’s opening match.

He later explained that his tears were caused by “something unrelated to football” and followed “a few difficult, complicated days”.

The family later confirmed that Jorge was receiving medical treatment.
