Obuasi, June 12, GNA- The Lizmart Shopping Centre, a popular supermarket in Obuasi on Monday donated assorted items valued at over 10 million cedis to the Black Queens, the nation's senior women's football team.
The donation, which was in response to appeals made to companies by Madam Grace Assiam, a national executive member of the Women's Sports Association of Ghana, is expected to motivate the Black Queens to win their matches for qualification to the Olympic Games. The items included five cartons of Milo, energy drinks, fruit juices, five boxes of biscuits, quantities of Nido, milk, packets of Sugar and a number of Lizmart Ghana at 50 embossed T-shirts. Mr. Kwame Nuamah, the marketing Manager of the Shopping Centre said Lizmart had identified itself with the development of sports, especially soccer in the country hence the Centre's contribution to the national football teams.
He said this year, Lizmart had donated similar items to the national U-14 women's football team, the Black Princesses. Mr. Nuamah said the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre, Mr. Kofi Quargrine was himself a footballer that was why the centre had developed interest in supporting football development at the national level. "These items are going to energize the Black Queens to win laurels for Ghana," the marketing manager said, adding "we want to pep them up to win the next game against the Congolese."
Madam Assiam who is the Obuasi Municipal sports development officer said the women sports association had planned to support the team with such donations.
She said the association was an advocate for all women sports in the country and that was why it was soliciting for items to induce higher performance from the Black Queens.
Madam Assiam who received the items on behalf of Black Queens in the Company Mr. Ernest Yaw Kwarteng, the Deputy Obuasi Municipal Coordinating Director and Kofi Atta-Mofah a former team manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a special adviser to Madam Assiam, called on Ghanaians to offer the same goodwill and support they offered the Black Stars to the Queens to consolidate women football ball in the country. 13 June 07
