MMA Thriller in Accra: Commey and Nelson get ready to rumble

The rlg Hathiramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium will be the hottest spot in the capital on Saturday November 4 as Ghana’s Isaac Commey clashes with British born Ghanaian Theophilus Nelson in a Mixed Martial Arts Elimination Contest.

The international promotion has other crack fighters from Nigeria, Cameroun on the bill.

The build up to the first professional bout to be organized by Warriors Sports Promotions had been successful since the UK based challenger, T.J. Nelson landed at the airport where a section of the media led by former Dep. General Secretary of SWAG, Sammy Heywood Okine aka ‘General One’ gave massive coverage and reportage.

Nelson paid some courtesy calls on the Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Saka Akwei, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah and the Tabon Manste, Nii Azumah Nelson V. He said it was a dream come true to fight in the homeland, as this baptism is going to propel him to higher heights in his career.

He was also engaged for television interviews on Kwese Sports TV, GTV Sports Plus, TV3, First Digital TV and Ghanaweb TV.

At the weigh in on Friday, the two welterweight fighters made the scale brilliantly proving their discipline and readiness to be caged.

Theophilus Nelson weighed first at 63.5kg while Isaac Commey stood on the scale at 64kg.

They both expressed preparedness and predicted knock outs.

Commey urged his fans to come in their numbers to see how he is going win to make Mixed Martial Arts a popular sport.

Nelson said a victory in Ghana is going to raise his reputation and fame. He promised a good fight and asked the fans to see the fastest growing sport in the world.

Event promoter Jeff Taylor of Warriors Sports fame said MMA is getting popular by the day and appealed to the media to give more publicity to practitioners like coaches, fighters, promoters, officials and other stakeholders.

He said the bill has been sanctioned by the Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMAF) and they are going to abide by international rules to ensure fairness and safty.

Gabby Ammah of Urban Sports Champions who fell in love with the humility of Isaac Commey and promised to support him with publicity said it is time other sports, especially MMA gets attention and sponsorship.

He noted that in some countries it is a big sport and the same can be said of Ghana because there are many strong young men in Bukom who are blessed with fighting skills.

Alan Philpott, trainer of Theo Nelson wished for a good fight and hoped his fighter carries the night.

But Ezekiel Dodoo, one of the coaches of Commey noted that it would be very difficult for the pride of Bukom, Commey to lose at home.

Tornado Bruce, a Ghanaian Kick boxer added that though Nelson is going to come technical, he would be handled well and beaten well. He said Commey must win to boast him moral and that of other MMA fighters, kickboxers and boxers.
