Ghana’s Olympic gold medallist, Martha Bissah, has denied reports in a section of the media that she has refused a scholarship offered her after her performance in the Youth Olympics in China.

According to her, the reports were not true as she has not rejected any scholarship offered to her by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to study in the United States of America or that from the President, Mr John Dramani Mahama.

“It is not true that I have refused the scholarship given to me. When I was offered the GAA scholarship I told them to give me some time since I was not well prepared,” Miss Bissah told the Junior Graphic in an interview, adding that she was later shocked to hear that she had turned down the offer.

On President Mahama’s scholarship, Miss Bissah said, she was at training when someone called to inform her that the President had mentioned in his State of the Nation Address that she was going to be given a scholarship.

This is as result of her performance in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China, where she won a gold medal in the 800 metres.

“I’m also interested in the scholarship given to me by the President because it is not everybody who gets such an opportunity. You cannot do sports without education, and I think the offer is good,” she said.

Her manager and radio presenter, Mr Micky Osei Berko, Miss Bissah said, was doing some follow-ups on the President’s offer.

She said combining sports with education was very important, and advised students engaged in sports at the various educational levels to take their studies seriously.
