The 4th edition of the McDan Ga-Adangbe Peace and Unity Cup Football Tournament has been launched, boasting a grand prize of GH₵10,000 for the winning team.

The tournament, conceived by Dr. Daniel McKorley, is held every general election year to promote unity and peace among the communities in the Greater Accra region.

In celebration of the fourth edition, the organizers have increased the cash prize to GH₵10,000, up from the previous GH₵2,000 awarded in 2020.

The winner will not only take home the hefty cash prize but also a glittering trophy and medals. The second and third-placed teams will also receive substantial rewards of GH₵5,000 and GH₵3,000, respectively.

This year's tournament has expanded to include 24 participating communities, up from 16. For the first time, the matches will be played across three venues built by McDan: La Town Park, Sege Sports Complex, and Teshie Sports Complex.

Speaking at the launch on Saturday, June 29, Jonathan Akrong, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, highlighted the tournament's role in enhancing local sports facilities.

"The first two editions were played on grassless pitches, but thanks to McDan's commitment, we've upgraded to astroturf stadiums, which will host this year's games. We hope the competition maintains its peaceful reputation and further unites the Greater Accra and Ga regions."

The event was graced by the current and aspiring Parliamentary candidates for the La Dade Kotopon constituency.

Incumbent MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah commended the tournament's aim of promoting peace and unity in the upcoming general elections.

"Elections should be a time of peace, not conflict. This initiative reminds us to advocate for peace. We have only one Ghana, so let's unite to make peace a reality," she stated.

Aspiring MP Joseph Addo called on the youth of Greater Accra to display genuine sportsmanship and maintain peace, regardless of the competition's outcome.

The 24 participating teams include defending champions Osu, along with La, Nkwantanang, Gamashi, Chorkor, Dansoman, B.Ngleshie, Weija Gbawe, Achimota, Dome Kwabenya, Dodowa, Adenta, Madina, East Legon, Teshie, Nungua, and Tema.

They are joined by Ashaiman, Kpone, Ningo Prampram, Sege, Ada, Nima/Mamobi, and Alajo Newtown.

The tournament is set to commence on Saturday, July 13, and will continue until November 2024.
