McDan open tennis championship has come to stay – Mckorley

Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr Daniel Mckorley has reiterated that the annual McDan open tennis championship has come to stay.

To the businessman, fulfilling his pledge of giving the event an international touch in this year's edition speaks volumes.

"We promised after the second edition last year that we will go international, and here we are today with that dream fulfilled.

"Though a Ghanaian didn't emerge as the ultimate winner, I see tennis as the winner, this sport gave Ghana gold in the last all Africa games due to the huge investment we made.

"We are encouraged by the high-level of competition and spectatorship, we will continue to support tennis. I believe it is one of the ways to take destitute from the streets, all of us can't play football and don't forget government alone can't do it all. The tournament no doubt has improved by the years.”

This year's event with players coming from Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Nigeria received massive support from companies like west blue consultant and rush energy drink.

It was Nigeria’s duo of Michael Moses and Sarah Adegoke, who reigned supreme in year’s edition (3rd) of the McDan West Africa Open Championship held in Accra on Saturday.

Adegoke recorded a two straight win- 6-1, 6-0 over Ghana’s Kate Coleman in the women’s final to pocket home $500, a trophy and products from sponsors with Moses seeing off Ghana’s number two seed Wisdom Na-Adjrago 7-5, 6-2 to runaway with a mouthwatering $1,000, a trophy and products.

The event, put together by the Ghana Tennis Federation was sponsored by McDan Shipping and Logistics with support from Rush Energy, AF West Security, West Blue Consults, Babolat and the National Sports Authority (NSA).
