In a country noted for the production of refined and globally respected midfielders in the past, the arrival of David Abagna onto the football landscape might be a testimony in the annals of Ghana football. The pocket size footballer surged to the summit of the game at a tender age thanks to his all round qualities on the field of play.

Born in the eastern most part of the country, David Sandan Abagna traded the Upper East region for an educational trip to Tamale. The youngster later stormed the northern region at an infantile age of just 13 years. Combining vision with power, energetic runs with eyes for goal, David Abagna truly looks like he is on the way to equalling the feat chalked by his role model Yaya Toure.

Joining Zaytuna Babies in the third tier football in Ghana in 2012, Abagna completed a remarkable story of lifting the Ghana premier league trophy just four years later. The versatile midfielder terrorised opposition players from one end of the pitch to the other, a feat he describes as a hobby. A monstrous campaign in the 2015/16 season in the division two league, however changed the fortunes of the teen prodigy. Technical and management team of Wa All Stars landed the now media engulfed youngster into their books half way into the 2016 season.

Arriving at a time when Wa All Stars had teamed up Atta Kofi Yeboah with Saddique Alhassan in a double pivot role, David had to wait for his chance and boy how he grabbed it. Making his first start away to Ebusua Dwarfs in Cape Coast, the former Zaytuna Babies youngster stole the show on the final home game of the season. He was named in a strong line up for their title defining game at home to Aduana Stars on September 14, 2016. He did not only win over the fan base, he won himself a place in the team and a gold medal as well.

Now the mainstay of the team in the Upper West region, the innocent and shy looking teenager, has been deployed across three different positions on the pitch. The versatility of the boy however makes it very simple for a manager bereft with players. From holding midfield role to attacking midfielder, auxiliary attacker to a roaming wide man, David is yet to pick a wrong foot this season. The strangest part of his game however lies on his eye for goal. Can you imagine a central midfielder racking home 9 goals in all competition?

The youngster has registered six premier league goals, two MTN FA Cup goals and one single strike in the 2017 WAFU. A brace each against Bolga All Stars and Berekum Chelsea added to solitary strikes against Ashgold and Tema Youth in a hugely prolific season –for a midfielder with defensive role. With MVPs falling head over heels, the emergence of David Abagna might just be the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle for the Black Stars. Can you name a better all round midfielder right now?

With an imminent NASCO Player of the month looming, Ghanaian can be forgiven if they compare the teen star to the legendary Stephen Appiah. If he can keep his form for just the remainder of the season I doubt if will grace the GHPL again. Welcome King David. Welcome Abagna. Bonne arrive Sandan!!!!
