Milovan Rajevac Foresees World Cup Disaster

GHANA coach Milovan Rajevac says the injury crisis in his team is threatening to disrupt its campaign at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa next month. The Serbian says the absence of three of his key players could lead to a "disaster" as he is unsure of pulling off a major surprise like they did at the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Rajevac survived a similar dilemma with flying colours at the tournament in January but the match fitness of captain Stephen Appiah, the long-standing back injury of his deputy John Mensah and Michael Essien's knee problems still persist.

Rajevac is less confident of pulling off the same feat again against much more formidable opposition at the World Cup.

"It's a dire situation because the three have been our captains," said the Serbian-born coach. "I want to put together a powerful mix of young and experienced players."

The three players were among the eight who missed the Africa Cup of Nations where they reached the final where they lost 1-0 to Egypt. Despite the presence of the youngsters and some of the key players like Sulley Muntari and John Pantsil, Rajevac says the World Cup will be tougher.

"The group is hard but the World Cup is not a request programme," said Rajevac.

Ghana will play in Group D alongside Germany, Australia and Serbia.
