Accra, Sept 9, GNA - The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has learnt with deep regret the violence and riots that occurred at the on-going Basic School Sports Festival which commenced on Monday, September 6 at Bolgatanga.

A statement signed on behalf of the Minister by Mr Kwasi Assan-Brew, Assistant Director said the Ministry regrets the unfortunate incident that took place after a football match involving the host, Upper East Region and the Ashanti Region.

The statement condemned the act in no uncertain terms and adviced all participants; officials and spectators to be circumspect and let peace prevail at the Festival.

"We wish to reiterate the Ministry's stand that discipline is fundamental for the development of sports".

"Players and athletes therefore need to be disciplined at all times to keep the peace whilst spectators should be tolerant and control their emotions to create a conducive atmosphere for the competition to go on" The statement commended the Upper East Regional Security Council led by the Regional Minister, Mr Mahami Salifu for working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
