Moro Tijani wins national title

ACCRA, October 1 -- Moro Tiajni, the pride of the Armed Forces, is the new national super featherweight boxing champion. He annexed the title when he kayoed Sulley Oguaa in the third round of their title fight at the Kaneshie Sports Complex on Saturday.

Right from the first round, it became obvious that the fight would not go the distance as Moro took absolute control, pumping stinging jabs into the face of Oguaa. Moro however slowed down in the second round and Oguaa surged forward looking for a knock out punch, which he never had.

When the third round began, Moro chased his opponent around, punishing him with straight left and right combinations and effective left upper cuts. Oguaa could not find any answers to the southpaw stance of Moro and his corner threw in the towel to signify the end of proceedings.

In the second title fight of the night, Aneyetei Laryea stopped Osumanu Terry in two minutes 38 seconds of the first round to become the new national and West African bantamweight champion.

The fight ended dramatically when Osumanu rose from the canvas after a slip but decided he had had enough. Referee Shadrach Acquaye had no potion than to stop the fight in favour of Aneyetei by a technical knock out. The national and West African super bantamweight title, was won by Ayitey Mettle who out pointed veteran Adamu Mohammed in the third title fight of the night.

The nimble footed Ayitey combined artistic boxing with some clowning and got a unanimous verdict. In one of the under cards, Ben Odametey gained a unanimous decision over Thomas Doudu in an eight round super featherweight duel.

In another supporting bout, Joshua Okine won a TKO decision over Ayitey Powers when referee Godfred Cobblah stopped the fight in the fourth round as Powers bled profusely from a cut on his right eye brow.

As a side attraction, two Ghanaian boxers were decorated, with championship belts, they had won in previous fights by Mr. Nii Quaye Mensah, president of the Commonwealth Boxing Commission.

Joseph Agbeko received the African Bantamweight Championship belt while James Armah, alias Bukom Fire got the Commonwealth and African Featherweight Championship belts.
