Former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah has disclosed the background story to Christian Atsu’s maiden call-up to the Black Stars.
Kwasi Appiah told the BKB Show that he first heard of Christian Atsu through his in-law, who had talked up the then-Porto winger as a potential star for Ghana.
Kwasi Appiah said he became convinced of Atsu’s talent after watching him and subsequently handed him a call-up.
“My in-law saw Christian Atsu and recommended him. I tracked him, watched some of his games, and realized that he could help us, so I invited him,” he said.
Christian Atsu made his Ghana debut on June 1, 2012, against Lesotho at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Atsu capped off an impressive performance with a goal in the game, which was part of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Christian Atsu went on to make 65 appearances for Ghana, scoring nine goals as a winger and sometimes an attacking midfielder.
At club level, Christian Atsu played for clubs like Chelsea, Bournemouth, Everton, among others.
