The Netball Association of Ghana (NAG) is planning to developing netball which was once a dominant discipline on the Ghana sporting calendar especially in the 60’s and early 70’s where the nation was counted among the best on the continent.
As Part of the preparations to making the discipline more attractive, the association in collaboration with GUSA has introduced it as a subject in the University of Cape Coast and the University of Education, Winneba but according to the President of the association Rev. E. Danso, for the sport to look more enviable it needs to go beyond boundaries, “Netball was dominant on our calendar in the 60’s and 70’s but extinction set in when the Nigerian contingent which was due to play Ghana failed to present a team but it was re introduced in Takoradi in the year 1992”.
“But thank God the Universities of Education and Cape Coast have now taken it up in teaching netball which is now being played at the commonwealth and the Olympic Games but I believe it is time we take it up to the universities not only as a sport but as a discipline and to the security services as well”, Rev. Neequaye said.
As part of the plan to making the sport more attractive, the association will partner the Ghana University Student Union (GUSA) to organize refresher courses for Senior and Junior High School teachers so that they will have the opportunity of imparting the basics of the game into the student.
“I think students who would be able to prove their worth beyond all reasonable doubt should be offered free scholarships into any tertiary institution of their choice and I think this will ginger more parents to encourage their wards into playing netball”, Mr. Cyril Quao, technical director of NAG said.
