National Athletes begin camping for Commonwealth Games

Accra, Sept. 26, GNA - Members of the National Athletics team have converged at the hostel of the National Hockey Pitch in Accra to begin camping for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.

Nine athletes as at the close of Sunday, September 26 were in camp in preparation towards the Games and have embarked on daily training at the Athletics Oval of the University of Ghana, Legon.

Information gathered by GNA Sports reveals that four of the five male athletes were in camp with sprinter Aziz Zakari scheduled to join his colleagues by close of Monday, September 27.

Zakari, according to the information was scheduled to join his colleagues from the United States of America (USA) last Saturday, but had his flight arrangements changed.

Long Jumper Ignatius Gaisah hasa meanwhile joined three local athletes, Nana Kofi Sam, Emmanuel Appiah Kubi and Nathan Kpegah on Saturday evening to round up preparations for the Games, whilst Laryea Akrong Allah is scheduled to join the team in India from USA.

Heptathlete Margaret Simpson as well as three local athletes, Elizabeth Amelefo, Beatrice Gyaman, Janet Amponsah and Anifa Sefakor make up the female team in camp with Linda Benin and Rosina Amenebede joining the team in India from their base in USA.

Ghana's team is expected to depart for India on Thursday to participate in the Games which will have 70 Commonwealth countries seeking for honours.

The event is scheduled for October 3-14.
