National tennis team in Togo for AJC qualifiers

A contingent of nine players and two officials yesterday left Accra for Lome, Togo, to participate in the 2018 Africa Junior Tennis Championship (AJC) qualifiers which starts today and ends on January 21.

The team, made up of six boys and three girls took to training at the tennis arena of the Accra Stadium Stadium last week in preparations towards the Togo games which will be staged at the Omnisports Stadium in Lome.

The players namely Kenneth Adjokatse, Desmond Ayaaba, Richard Okine, Aaron Asante, Louise Nyaaba Richmond Armah, Naa Ankrah, Yayrah Komashie and Lawrencia Mainoo will compete for honours in the boys and girls Under-14 and 16 categories.

Speaking to tennisgh.com ahead of the team’s departure, coaches Yahya Mckorley and Bernard Ashitey Armaah were confident the players would do well in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) recognised championship.

Coach Yahya said all the participating teams would first play in a warm up tournament before the main event.

"We are looking forward to the event in Lome and we will surely do the country proud," he assured.

Coach Yahya noted that despite the paucity of funds, the players got the required preparation for the qualifier and are motivated to put up a good performances which will lead them into the main African Junior Championship to be held later this year.
