New Boss For National Soccer To Be Appointed Soon

Mon, 11 Dec 2000 Source: Accra Mail

Only a few weeks remain before the eagerly awaited decision to determine who heads the GFA, his vice, other members and the composition of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

It has been a long and at times grueling process for the candidates. They have gone about their campaigns

with vigour and imagination, promoting their bids with insistent persuasiveness and sometimes locking horns directly with one another. While the candidates may have seemed a little quieter in the first few months, they have more recently been shaping up for a final promotional offensive. Oheneba Charles one time chairman of the Professional League Board and Kwaebeberem boss is expected to be nominated by sports minister E.T Mensah as the GFA chairman. Charles sits high in the minister's heart. He has also managed to patch up all differences with Kotoko boss.

The other contestant to the post is Boye Sowah. Boye Sowah, a man of many parts, does not enjoy the confidence of the sports minister. But then efforts are going on by a group within to prolong the lifespan of the present GFA for another term. If it succeeds, it will block the chance of Oheneba Charles from taking the seat. In that case Alhaji Nuru Deen Jawula will retain his post.

But it is in the race for the vice-chairman of GHALCA that has generated a lot of interest and excitement. The winner automatically becomes the vice chairman of the GFA. Here Alhaji Karim Gurzah (King Faisal), Akwasi Acheampong (Goldfields), Lawyer Owusu Ansah (Kotoko) and captain Victus are fighting for the post. Bofoakwa and Kwaebebebrem and their allies will vote for Owusu Ansah. Alhaji Gurzar will count on the Phobians, the Wonder Club, Liberty Professionals and others for a win.

But watch the moves of the Prampram Royal. Mr. Nartey has roped in all first and second division clubs, forty-eight in number, to back a man from among them. Could he be Agyeman Dua of Bibiani Stars who is gunning for the GHALCA chair? Lawyer Fugah (Oly) will also be there to give the incumbent J.Y Appiah, a tough time.

Expect Maxwel Safo of Maxbees to join the membership of the Professional League Clubs Board.

Apart from all the lobbying long leg and persuasiveness, most of the voters will be swayed by the party that wins the 2000 general and presidential elections. Write off the chances of Oheneba Charles if the NPP wins the elections. Sports Minister will not be there to promote his interest.

Another thing, the cases pending at the courts against the GFA will all be withdrawn.
