Following the flamboyant start to the Ghana Premier League without a headline sponsor, Bekwai-based New Edubiase United will withdraw from the league after three matches if no sponsors come on board, according to Abdul Salam Yakubu.
According to the President of the 2012 FA Cup champions, the financial predicaments faced by the 16 clubs need proper and careful examination as they cannot continue playing without money.
“Some clubs have not paid their players for close to eight months while others have not even paid the signing-on fees of their new players. But we are told to start the league,” Sabato told Nyira FM in Kumasi on Saturday morning.
“For us, we will start the league but if after three matches no sponsor comes on board to rescue us, I will advise myself and my club,” he added.
This comes as a big blow to many a day after the long-awaited Ghana Premier League shot into a blistering start.
The title sponsors of the league, First Capital Plus Bank withdrew their sponsorship at the end of last season citing restructuring as the reason.
The Ghana FA Vice President, George Afriyie disclosed at the launch of the 2015/16 league season that a sponsor will soon come on board.
But it appears the President of New Edubiase wants all negotiations to be done quickly to relief the clubs of their heavy financial burden.new Edubiase United lost their league opener to Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
