In a move set to bolster his career and provide a new trajectory, Nigerian footballers Godwin Akpo has officially nationalized to Benin Republic. The talented forward, who has demonstrated remarkable prowess on the field, is now poised to bring his skills to the Attack Energy in Afghanistan, while also eyeing bigger markets and more significant opportunities.

Godwin Akpo's football journey began in Nigeria, but his professional career took off when he signed his first contract in Sudan. Despite spending only six months there, he quickly returned to Nigeria and subsequently moved to Benin Republic in 2017. Signing with Jeunesse De Sportive D'agonlin (JSA) in the Championnat National du Bénin, he found his footing in the Benin premier league.

"I didn't really grow up in Benin as I was mostly based in Nigeria, but I do visit sometimes," Godwin Akpo shares. His dual exposure to both countries has now culminated in his decision to represent Benin Republic at the national level.

At 23, Godwin Akpo joined Gombe United from Wikki Tourist in Nigeria, where he made a significant impact. "My experience with Gombe was good. I brought my own experience to the team and made my mark. Most importantly, I helped them stay in the premier league," he recalls.

His talent soon attracted international attention. A call from a sports journalist led to offers from two of the biggest clubs in Iran. After thorough discussions, he chose to join Attack Energy in Afghanistan, driven by their ambition to play in the AFC Cup.

"Coming to Afghanistan was never my plan, but their ambition to play in the AFC Cup convinced me. Besides, I understand and can speak their language to a large extent, which made the transition easier," he explains.

Godwin Akpo made an immediate impact at Attack Energy, playing just seven games but scoring seven goals and providing three assists. His contributions helped his team win the league without conceding a single goal, a record that stands unparalleled.

"My achievements so far are good. I helped my team win the league without any defeat or conceding a goal. I believe that will be a record no team can beat. I am happy to have been part of that wonderful team," he says with pride.

Looking ahead, Godwin Akpo is determined to reach the highest levels of football. "I hope to play in Europe or for a big team in Asia someday. By God's grace, I want to help my country, Benin, qualify and play in the World Cup, something they have never done before," he shares.

He dreams of playing for Real Madrid or Arsenal. "Real Madrid is the team I love and support. Arsenal holds a special place because my late father was a die-hard fan. I would be happy to see his dreams come true," he reflects.

"My dad's love for football and belief in my potential drives me. Watching Ronaldo taught me a lot; he was a very skillful striker and a dangerous attacker. That's why defenders are scared of me," he adds..

As Godwin Akpo embarks on this new chapter with Benin Republic, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a determination to succeed.

With eyes set on the future, Godwin Akpo is not just a player; he is a beacon of hope and inspiration for many young footballers in Benin Republic and Nigeria. The football world watches eagerly as he aims for the stars.
