Accra, July 25, GNA - The Ghana Weightlifting Association (GWA) has secured the services of a Nigerian coach to handle the national weightlifting team.

The coach, Mr Nadjeti Fetrie is currently in the country to finalise arrangements with officials of the GWA to undertake the job. Officials of the GWA have therefore forwarded the documents of the coach to the National Sports Council (NSC) for consideration as the national coach.

Mr Johnson Cliff Aboagye, Chairman of the Association who disclosed this to the GNA Sports in Accra said the association is waiting on the NSC to approve the appointment of the coach to enable them carry out some of the programmes outlined for the year.

He said the coach when given the nod would help in the development of the sport both at the national and at the grassroots level.

According to Mr Aboagye the Association plans to embark on a massive nation-wide talent hunt exercise in a quest to give the sport a nationalistic character, hence the appointment of the coach will play a key role in the scheme of things.

Mr Aboagye said the Association hopes to increase their haul of medals on the international stage when they make an appearance at the Commonwealth Games in Australia next year.

Ghana won three medals at the last All Africa Games held in Abuja, Nigeria in 2003.
