Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has faced significant backlash from Nigerian football fans following his comments on Ademola Lookman's international career choice.
Crouch suggested that Lookman should have waited for an England call-up instead of opting to represent Nigeria.
“He could have easily played for England like his U20 teammates if he was patient,” Crouch told TNT.
Lookman was born in England to Nigerian parents and was eligible to play for both the Three Lions and Super Eagles.
The 26-year-old chose the latter, making his debut under Augustine Eguavoen in the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana in May 2022.
Since then, the Atalanta forward has earned 21 caps for Nigeria and has scored 6 goals.
His performances over the past two seasons, particularly his standout showing in the Europe League final, highlight his growing prowess on the field.
Crouch's assertion that Lookman could have easily played for England like his U20 teammates if he had been patient was not well-received by Nigerian fans as they took to social media to express their discontent.
