No plans to replace Konadu – GFA

The management committee chairman of the home-based Black Stars team Fred Pappoe insists there is no need to replace Maxwell Konadu as coach of the side.

Some have blamed the team’s inability to record an emphatic win over Cote d’Ivoire in the opening leg qualifier to the temporal absence of Maxwell Konadu from the team’s camp in the lead up to game.

Konadu had to leave the team behind for a few days to travel to Washington to be with the Black Stars team – where he is the assistant coach – for an international friendly against Canada.

The practice of head coach of the main Black Stars team working as the coach for the home-based side was abandoned by the Ghana FA since Milovan Rajevac was replaced by Goran Stevanovic in 2010.

Rajevac led the home-based Black Stars team to their maiden CHAN tournament in 2009 where Ghana emerged runners up to DR Congo.

There is however a growing sense amongst some football fans that Maxwell Konadu’s divided attention working with both national teams is hurting the side.

But Management Committee chief Fred Pappoe insists Konadu’s work has been very satisfactory and thus no need to make him drop either of his positions.

“Why do you fix it when it is not broken?” he quizzed.

“Maxwell Konadu has been handling the team for some time now and he is has been doing well so why change him?”

Ghana carries a slim 2-1 lead into the return leg of the 2016 CHAN qualifiers against the home-based Elephants to be played in a fortnight at a yet to be named location in Cote d’Ivoire.
