National featherweight boxing champion, Ben Odametey, last Saturday failed in his bid to win the Commonwealth superfeatherweight title when he suffered a fourth round knockout to defending champion, Michael Gomez, in Manchester, UK.
According to reports, Gomez was in absolute control of the fight from the bell till the fourth round stoppage. The fight was preceded by controversy during which GBA vice-chairman, Moses Foh-Amoaning, in London for the Commonwealth Boxing Congress, made a late attempt to prevent Odametey from engaging in the contest.
The situation was saved by a last-minute intervention from GBA Chairman, Nii Quaye Mensah, whose note to Commonwealth boxing chief, Simon Block, enabled Odametey to take up the fight.A similar controversy caused Eric Odumase, the original opponent for Gomez to give way to Odametey.
