Ohene Djan Lectures to Resume

The Ohene Djan Memorial Lectures instituted in the late 80s by RICS CONSULT is to resume after 10 years break.

The lectures which deal with the fortunes of the country's sports development and promotion were last held in 1992 and delivered by Nana Kumi Gyamfi aka Mr. C.K. Gyamfi, the nation's highly ranked football coach.

Professor J.E.A. Mills delivered the maiden edition in 1988 with Professor George Benneh and the late Sam Ansah Okyere as subsequent speakers.

The objective of the annual exposition is to honour the memory of Ghana's first Director of Sports, Ohene Djan, who died on Thursday, March 26, 1987.

It is also to immortalize him in recognition of his unique role in shaping post-independence sports organization and development from 1957 until the coup of 1966 which brought down President Kwame Nkrumah's reign and the First Republic.

Mr. Ohene Djan and his administration will be remembered for his imaginative mind which led to the formation of the student soccer group, the Academicals, the Real Republicans and the Black Stars which won the African Nations Cup in 1963 and 1965.

Ohene Djan's remarkable achievements which are yet to be equaled were also in the areas of amateur boxing in which Ike Quartey won a silver Medal at the 1960 Olympics, and Mike Ahey, long jump record at Perth Commonwealth Games among others.

According to Mr. Magnus Rex Danquah, Managing Consultant of RICS Consult, his company has found it prudent to resume the lectures to offer the nation a vehicle for alternatives to addressing topical issues facing administrators towards assisting to re-define the way forward, considering the evolving global sports landscape.
