Accra, March 23, GNA - The stadia earmarked to host matches of the African Football Tournament, have been provided with athletic ovals and shall be fitted with tartan tracks.

"It is the Ohene Djan stadium in Accra, which would not have an athletic oval. The reason is that, the stadia that shall host the opening and closing ceremony must meet the FIFA and CAF requirement that, the particular stadium must have a minimum seating capacity 40,000," Papa Owusu-Ankomah, Minister of Education, Science and Sports, said in Parliament on Friday.

He was responding to a question on why no provision had been made for athletic ovals in the rehabilitation works on the Ohene Djan, Baba Yara and the two new stadia at Secondi-Takoradi and Tamale.

The Minister said in order to meet this requirement at the Ohene Djan stadium, the tartan tracks had to be removed and the stands expanded and brought nearer the playing field.

In response to another question, Papa Owusu-Ankomah told the house that the school-feeding programme being piloted could only be expanded nation-wide after an assessment and impact analysis.
