Okwawu files for stay of execution

Accra, Nov. 2, GNA - Premier League side, Okwawu United on Tuesday filed for a stay of execution after the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) placed a two match home ban on the club for crowd violence.

Mr Oduro Nyarko, Secretary of the Management Board of the club told the GNA Sports that they have completed all the necessary procedures concerning the case and are expecting a favourable response from the Committee soon.

He said they filed for the stay of execution because they believed the club has a good case and is capable of emerging winners at the Appeals Committee.

The Disciplinary Committee early this week imposed a two match home ban on the "Soccer Mountaineers" plus a fine of seven million cedis after their last league match against Real Tamale United (RTU) at the Mpraeso Brightons Park ended abruptly.

The referee was said to have called off the match citing insecurity after a missile thrown from the stands hit his head.

Okwawu were also declared losers of the match and had three additional points deducted from their total point build up. Mr Nyarko said they would be cheated if they should start serving the sentences since they are confident of turning the decision in their favour at the appellate level.

He said the best way to avoid being cheated was to file for the stay of execution.

The Secretary stated that the club would follow it up with an appeal at the Appeals Committee on Thursday, November 4. Okwawu as a result of the decision of the Committee remains second from the bottom with five points and stands the risk of being relegated after the season.

The Professional League Board (PLB) will determine the venue for the club's next home game against Ashantigold as they begin their two match home ban should the Committee stick to its decision.
