One record falls at GUSA games

Kumasi, Jan. 5, GNA – Esther Adwubi of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Thursday clocked a time of 4.59.37 seconds to set a new record in the women’s 1,500 event at this year’s Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games.

The old record stood at 5.09.40 seconds.

Adwubi powered home to a race of her life as she stretched to her elastic limit to take the lead in the last lap of the race to finish first and it came no surprise when she broke the existing record much to the delight of spectators of the event which is being hosted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Rashida Ayuma of KNUST came second in a time of 5.17.90 seconds, while Portia Okyere of University of Ghana (UG) finished third with a time of 5.27.61 seconds.

In the men’s event, William Akuka of UG clocked 4.04.05 seconds to place first, Stephen Quarmi of UEW placed second in a time of 4.07.5 seconds and Oduro Freiku took the third position with a time of 4.09.83 seconds.

The 10-day programme would see the participants compete for honours in soccer, athletics, badminton, lawn and table tennis, hockey, volleyball, basketball and handball.

The KNUST, UG, UEW, University of Cape Coast, University of Development studies, Institute of Professional Studies and University of Mines and Technology are participating in the event.
