Koforidua, July 2, GNA - The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Sports Council on Thursday organized open-air boxing fiesta at the Jackson's Park at Koforidua as part of the celebration of this year's Republic Day.
The tournament which was sponsored by the New Juaben Municipal Assembly, saw boxers from the Eastern Region facing their counterparts from the Greater Accra in 7 bouts.
In the flyweight contest, Manyo Plange of Greater Accra(GA) defeated S.S. Kawawa of Koforidua by a unanimous points decision, Abdul Majid of Koforidua defeated Mohammed Felsah of Akwatia in a featherweight contest while Basiru Gambo of Akwatia defeated Patric Narh of Aboabo in the bantamweight fray.
Nana Yaw Ofori of Koforidua defeated Kwasi Tyson also of Koforidua in a lightweight contest while Samuel Kofi of Koforidua secured a fourth round knock-out victory in his light welterweight fight with Richard Tundafly of Aboabo.
Zandor of Koforidua defeated Ibrahim Fuseni of Akwatia in a light middleweight contest.
There were exhibition fights among children between the ages of seven and 10 years from the Fit Square Club of Kokomlemle in Accra and a women's exhibition fight between Ameley Tyson of Wisdom Boxing Club of Accra and Gifty Tiger of Black Panther Boxing Club also of Accra.
The New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, Nana Adjei Boateng appealed to people in the Municipality to contribute towards the development of sports in the area.
He said even though the Assembly and the National Sports Council were lending their support towards sports development in the Municipality, the contribution was not enough to get the needed expertise to put in more professionalism in the development of the sports for the benefit of the people.
Nana Adjei Boateng noted that the boxers needed to be provided with kits if the Municipality was to produce the champions it provided the nation in the past years. 02 July, 04
