Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler says Edwin Gyimah’s versatility is an asset for the Sea Robbers.

Gyimah made his Bucs debut at centre-back in a 1-1 draw against his former side Mpumalanga Black Aces this past Friday.

And although the Ghanaian, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, made an error leading up to Collins Mbesuma’s goal, Tinkler was encouraged by his display at Orlando Stadium.

“He is versatile. I remember him when I was still at Wits back in 2008 if I’m not mistaken, he came there and already then we saw his qualities,” Tinkler says of the ex-SuperSport United man.

“He is a defensive midfielder that’s what has been his role. Here in South Africa, clubs have been using him at central defence as well.

“In conversations with the coaches from his previous clubs, they have stated that he is versatile and plays in both positions, which is ideal for us.”

Pirates next visit Polokwane City on Wednesday, with Mpho Makola doubtful for the clash at Peter Mokaba Stadium due to illness.

The Buccaneers will host Egyptian giants Al-Ahly in the first leg of their Confederation Cup semi-final in Soweto on Saturday.
