Our aim is not the league - Gerald Ankrah

Hearts of Oak’s Managing Director, Gerald Ankrah has publicly opined that the current administrators at the club are rebuilding the club adding their immediate aim is not to win the league.

The Phobians have gone six years without a major silverware compelling the teaming fans of the club to put pressure on the management and the playing body.

Last year the former Premier League champions managed to beat the drop zone as they finished 13th on the table, just a step away from relegation.

Since their continental triumph in 2000 and 2004 winning the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup respectively, the Phobians are yet to make any meaningful impact in Africa’s inter clubs competitions.

But Managing Director of the club, Gerald Ankrah has called on the supporters to be patient stating that they are rebuilding the club for future results.

“We are rebuilding the club, that is very basic and we are not going to do the massive thing, our aim is just not to win the league and have players who go down the drain,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com

“We are building the club such that within the next two to three years Hearts of Oak will be the brand that we all want to see. Don’t forget in winning the cup in 2000 and 2004 we then have a consistent set of players over six years that stayed together and they knew each other.”

“So let us take our time once again and build the club when we get there everybody else will be happy. We should not just have mere solutions to the problems we have now, if we win the league is a bonus but additionally we have to rebuild the brand and that is what we are doing,” he added.

He added: “Basically we have not put into practice the lessons that we learnt and if you look at what we went through last season, this coming season though supporters are all over the place making quite some hell about our recruitment and things. We have learnt a lot and for that reason we are trying to make sure we get the basics right and come the next two or three years we will see Hearts of Oak as a different club.”
