Former Hearts of Oak captain Lawrence Adjah Tetteh says he and his former team-mates won many laurels for the club because they planned to leave an enviable legacy.
The former Ghana Premier League champions are yet to win the domestic top-flight since winning it six years ago.
The Phobians nearly went on relegation last season after occupying the 13th position in the 16 club league.
Many have attributed the club’s downfall to the poor quality of players signed by the team’s management as well as the poor managerial skills exhibited by some management members.
On the contrary, Adjah Tetteh believes that the current players of the club cannot be blamed alone for the club’s woes, noting that he would urge them to lift up their performance in order to achieve something for themselves.
He noted that the incomparable legacy left by Mohammed Polo and his team-mates encouraged them to do something different for the team in order to be remembered in the future.
‘’During our time we planned to leave a legacy behind. Honestly I cannot say that the current players are not playing their hearts out but they have to work harder to do something extraordinary in order for people to remember them after their career,’’ he told West End Radio.
‘’We motivated ourselves with the kind of legacy Mohammed Polo and others left behind, so we decided to replicate that. We talked to each other that irrespective of the situation we find ourselves we should put up our best performances. We also had financial crisis but we put that behind us because we planned to leave a legacy at Hearts of Oak’’.
The combative box to box midfielder was part of the Accra Hearts of Oak team which won the maiden edition of the CAF Confederations Cup in 2004/2005 season.
