Para-cyclist to embark on polio educational tour

Ghana's para-cyclist Allem Mumuni, will embark on a three-day tour to Kumasi as part of activities marking the 33rd World Polio Day celebrations.

Mumuni, who is the leading para-cyclist in Africa and a participant at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, will use the opportunity to educate people on polio.

The tour under the theme "Ride out Polio" will see the athlete engaging in a 560 kilometer ride from Accra to Kumasi through Koforidua from October 21 to 24.

Mumuni, who was paralysed at age five due to polio, told the GNA Sports that, he will leave Accra on October 21, to Koforidua and continue to Kumasi and will call on the Eastern and Ashanti Regional ministers as well as the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to Mumuni, he will ride back to Accra on October 24 and is expected to reach Lizzy's Sports Complex, Legon by mid-day for the World Polio Day celebrations.

He said, he will be accompanied by two police escorts for the three-day educational tour.

Mumuni, Polio Ambassador for Rotary Club International, said, "though there are indications that Ghana is polio free, there me some hidden cases especially in the remote areas of the country hence the need continue with raising awareness on the deadly disease.

"We need to continue talking about polio and the need for immunization. I will not have suffered from polio if my parents were to be educated on the disease." He stated.

The three-day tour is under the sponsorship of Rotary Club International and Enterprise Group.
