THE Ghana Police Service volleyball teams (men and women) have won the just-ended 2002 volleyball league. By their victories Police teams have qualified to play in the Africa championship series.
The ladies team will be going to Benin for their game while the men are expected to go Egypt to sort out things with Egyptian counterpart, in April 2003. This is the 14th time the Ghana Police teams have annexed the volleyball league.
The men won the league by beating all their opponents, including GHAPOHA, Air Force, Navy, Army, Maracuja, Kwamark, Stoke City, Osu Youth, Peace, Lamptey Mills, La Pioneers, Lebanon House, VALCO, Fire Service and Prison Service.
Apart from losing to the Prison Service Women’s team in the first round, the Police Ladies also won all their matches.However, there are questions as to whether the Police teams will participate in the African championship.
On several occasions the Police have won the volleyball league but have been denied the chance of taking part in the continental competition. The reasons have always been attributed to lack of fundsIt is imperative for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Sports Council and the Ghana Volleyball Association to make everything possible to ensure that the Police teams take their rightful place on the African continent.
It would be appropriate if the same attention accorded football in the country is also extended to volleyball. With budding and talented stars among them, the Police need the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other sponsors for the African competition.
Since the Police administration cannot finance the teams with its meagre budget, the Ministry in the Interior may be in the position of liaising with the Sports Ministry of search of enough funds and sports kits to enable the proud Police volleyball teams achieve their long- cherished dream of winning the African volleyball championships and even proceed to the world level.
