Police warns sports fans to be of good behaviour

Accra, May 13, GNA - The Police Administration on Friday assured football fans that stringent security measures have been put in place to ensure that the sixth week GT Premier League match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in Kumasi on Sunday was played in a peaceful manner.

It therefore warned all supporters not to carry any offensive weapon such as stones, knives, bottles, sticks and others to the vicinity of the stadium.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr David S. Eklu, of the Police Public Relations Directorate said anyone caught with any offensive weapons would be dealt with accordingly.

It said the Police Administration also issued a stern warning to all club officials and their supporters to be of good behaviour and desist from any unruly action.

The statement said the warning was in reaction to a statement by a director of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club threatening that there would be bloodshed if certain referees were appointed to handle the Kotoko-Hearts gt-league match scheduled for the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Sunday May 15.

It said "the Police Administration considers this statement as regrettable and unfortunate especially coming from a top official who should know better."

It would be recalled that Mr Wilberforce Mfum, member of the Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko was on an Accra Radio Station, "Happy FM" threatening mayhem similar of the May 9, 2001 should a referee from a particular ethnic group was selected to handle the match.
