The Senior Women’s National team of Ghana added their name to the records books of the All Africa Games by winning their first ever gold in the competition's history.

The first half of the game failed to produce any goal as the game was fairly balanced, but the Black Queens who were determined to avenge their denial by Cameroon from reaching the summer Olympics saw their hard work paid off in the late minute of the second half when Portia Boakye slotted in the championship winning goal with three minutes to end the 90 minutes of regulation time.

The Black Queens were indeed destined to win the women’s football at the all Africa games, because they emerged the lucky side when they qualified from the group ahead of South Africa through drawing of lots, before edging Ivory Coast by a goal to nil in the semis in Brazzaville the host city.

Ghana lost the final in 2011 to Cameroon when the tournament was staged in Maputo, Mozambique, so this win for the Queens is a sweet revenge against a side they have had numerous engagements in recent times.

Women's football at the All Africa Games began in 2003. Nigeria have won 2, Cameroon 1 and Ghana have become the 3rd nation to win the championship.
