Prempeh College are new Milo Soccer Champions

Koforidua, May 30, GNA - Prempeh College of Kumasi on Saturday beat Winneba Secondary School(WINNESEC) 7-6 on penalties to lift the soccer trophy of this year's Milo Schools and Colleges Soccer Championship at Koforidua.

The full time scores was one all.

St. John's School, Sekondi won the third place by beating the defending champions, New Juaben College of Commerce (NJUACOCO) one nil in their play-off to determine the winners of the third and forth positions.

To reach the finals, Prempeh beat NJUACOCO one nil in the first semi-final match while WINNESEC beat St. John's 3-1 in the other second semi-final match.

Greater Accra Region beat Northern Region 4-2 in the final match of the Under 12 boys soccer division to become the new Milo Soccer Champions.

In the play off to determine the third and forth positions, Eastern Region spanked Ashanti Region 3-0 to place third.

On their way to the finals, Greater Accra Region white-washed Eastern Region 3-0 in the first semi-final match while Northern Region narrowly beat Ashanti Region 3-2.

In the volleyball girls competition, Tamale Secondary School (TAMASCO) beat Akim Oda Secondary School (ODASCO) 3-0 to become the new champions.

Kumasi Girls Secondary School (KUGISS), the defending champions beat Labone Secondary School (LABONE) 2-1 to win the third position. In the semi-finals matches, ODASCO beat LABONE 2-0 while TAMASCO defeated KUGISS 2-0.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Michael K. Nsowah said that it was regrettable that sports in the country had sunk so low of late and cautioned that measures should be embarked upon to revive the few sporting talents and to groom and nurture the youth to keep sports alive.

He there was the need for the country to pay particular attention in unearthing the talents of the youth in their formative years so as to win honour and glory in both national and international levels.

Mr Nsowah appealed to Physical Education teachers and sports coaches to intensify their efforts in teaching the youth various sporting skills needed for them to develop into good performers and achievers.

The Acting Director General also appealed to Nestle Ghana Limited, sponsors of the competition to consider the provision of sports infrastructure and logistics to the schools since the lack of the needed equipment had been a big set-back to sports development in the country. The Products Manager of Nestle, Mr Tettey Aryee announced that next year his company would sponsor football championship for girls.
