President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to transform the Ho Sports Stadium into a modern multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility, with the aim of completing the reconstruction as Ghana celebrates its 70th anniversary next year [2027].
The President made the announcement after inspecting the stadium in the Volta Region, where redevelopment works are underway to upgrade the facility to FIFA Category B standards and position it to host major national and international sporting events.
The Ho Sports Stadium has endured years of deterioration, with a poor playing surface, flooding challenges and ageing spectator stands limiting its ability to stage top-level competitions.
Speaking during the visit on July 17, 2026, President Mahama said the government’s vision is to completely modernise the stadium, citing its strategic location and availability of land for expansion.
“As we know, Ghana celebrates its 70th anniversary next year, and so we wonder whether by the time this stadium is also 70 years old, we would have reconstructed it into a very modern facility,” he said.
“It has a very strategic central location in the municipality, which is an advantage, and it has sufficient land around it to build a very modern stadium here.”
The President disclosed that the government will provide funding for the project, complete the architectural designs and engage the public before construction officially begins.
“We will allocate the funds, we will do the designs, the designs will be brought back here, public interaction on the designs will be done, and after that, we will cut the sod for the work to commence,” he added.
President Mahama stressed that the redevelopment project extends beyond football, with plans to create a vibrant multi-purpose complex capable of hosting sporting, commercial and entertainment activities throughout the year.

“We want it to be a multi-use facility, not only for soccer, but it must have other entertainment complexes,” he noted.
He explained that the redesigned stadium will feature shops, restaurants and other commercial facilities to ensure the venue remains active even when football matches are not being played.
“The problem we have with most stadia is that when we are not playing soccer, we are not doing anything with the stadium. And so this stadium will have shops, it will have entertainment, it will have restaurants and different facilities.”
According to the President, the upgraded stadium will include a modern natural grass pitch with an automated irrigation system, improved spectator stands and infrastructure that meets CAF requirements for hosting continental competitions.
President Mahama also revealed the government’s long-term ambition of developing at least five stadiums across Ghana capable of staging major African football tournaments, with the ultimate goal of bringing the Africa Cup of Nations back to the country after Ghana last hosted the competition in 2008.
