Prison and GAR make impressive start in boxing

Kumasi, June 24, GNA - Prison Service and Greater Accra Region made impressive starts in the boxing tournament at the on-going National Sports Festival in Kumasi by winning two bouts each on the first night. Bruce Aryee, a member of the national boxing team, the Black Bombers, set the tone for the Prisons team when he pummelled Ayoma Boat of Ashanti Region into submission in their lightweight fray.

The corner-men of Ayoma threw in the towel in the second round of the four rounds contest to save their ward from further punishment. Aryee went into action right from the sound of the bell and subjected Ayoma Boat to real beating, sending a combination of left and right punches to the face, head and body of his opponent to which he had no answer which forced the corner-men of Ayoma to throw in the towel. This early win, gingered Edward Ankon also of Prisons Service to gain a second round technical knockout win over Pius Pio of the Eastern Region in their lightweight contest.

Atto Ricketts of Greater Accra Region gained a unanimous points decision over Ada Tulay of the Central Region in their middleweight contest and Samuel Kotey also of Greater Accra won a unanimous points decision over Francis Bawa of Ashanti Region in their featherweight fray.

Isaac Bantuna of Upper East Region won a unanimous points decision in another light-welterweight fight over Bawa Apanga of the Upper West Region.

The fight between Emmanuel Halm of Central Region and Mohammed Ayumbiri of the Upper East region in a welterweight contest was declared a no contest when both boxers resorted to hitting below the belt inspite of several warnings.
