Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Reverend Osei Kofi, has shared the story of how the Black Stars of Ghana drew 3-3 with European giants Real Madrid in a friendly match at the Accra Sports Stadium in 1962.
He recalled that the then Director of Sports, Ohene Djan, encouraged the team to avoid a humiliating defeat, promising a celebration if they succeeded.
Kofi mentioned that Djan's words motivated the team to give their best against Real Madrid, which featured top stars like Puskas, Bento, and Alfredo Di Stefano.
He noted that the team's rigorous training and preparation paid off, resulting in a surprising 3-3 draw.
“In those days, we played against foreign teams like Fortuna Dusseldorf, Stoke, and Real Madrid. In 1962, when Real Madrid came, Ohene Djan said, ‘Boys, I know we can’t beat Real Madrid, but if you can avoid conceding 10 goals, we’ll organize a party for you.’
"We were terrified, but the training we did before the game was intense. In the end, we drew 3-3 at the Accra Sports Stadium,” he said during an interview with Muftawu Nabila on JoyNews.
He also recounted a recent encounter with officials from Leganes in Spain, where he told them about the game.
“Recently, some people from Leganes in Spain came here, and I told them how the Black Stars drew with Real Madrid. I mentioned players like Puskas, Bento, and Alfredo Di Stefano. They didn’t believe it until they checked Madrid’s archives and realized they had spoken to a legend,” he added.
