Randy Abbey: We should not compare sports

GFA Executive Committee Member Randy Abbey is advocating sports

enthusiasts to desist from comparing different sporting disciplines but rather

focus on finding ways to success for each and every sports fraternity.

Mr. Abbey says there is no substance in arguments that athletes of

the various sporting disciplines should all enjoy the same amount of bonuses

and other incentives whilst on national duty like footballers do.

“For me the answer is very simple. Both teachers and doctors do

important work but the doctor earns more than the teacher but nobody is saying

the doctor’s pay must be reduced to increase that of the teacher. For me it’s

not an argument of bonuses, it’s about how we can improve the lot of the lesser

sports to give good performance,” Randy Abbey says.

He added: “It’s a worldwide phenomenon, I don’t think Usain Bolt

earns as much as Lionel Messi. No two sports can be the same, let’s agree on

that. So we should not compare sports. Essentially what they need is not about

bonuses.

“If they don’t have infrastructure and facilities, it will come to

nothing. Don’t look at bonuses, let’s look at infrastructure, capacity, what

the athlete needs to put up top class performance.”
