Rugby chief hails quality improvement

* as 2012 7s league kicks off*

Gifty Annan-Myers, President of the Ghana Rugby Association is in utopian ecstasy with improvements in the play of players, officials and teams in many aspects including quality of play, technical aptitude and discipline as the 2012 Rugby 7s League began over the weekend.

The Rugby 7s league was first staged to a great success last year under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Rugby Association and suffered most notably from a lack of funding. But this year’s event has not only already seen huge financial support from Nurevas food Ghana Limited, Clifton Homes and Savanna Springs Mineral Water.

Add it to the training received by coaches, referees and administrators as well as the media last December when an International Rugby Board official was in Ghana to conduct such training exercise, and the quality of play has also increased, which was on show in last Saturday’s games.

“There has been massive improvement which has made today’s tournament very exciting and successful. I wi9ll take it from two angles, technical and discipline.

“Technically, a huge improvement because you know there was training in December conducted by the IRB official. This has helped improve the technical side for both officials and players,” Madam Annan-Myers told www.sportsinghana.com afterwards.

She added: “Discipline too has been fantastic. We had a lot of issues last year but this year we are licensing all the players.

“The referees too have improved and we’ve also got support from some sponsors so there’s big improvement financially too.”

In the event on the opening weekend of the 2012 season at the Athletics Oval of the University of Ghana in Legon last Saturday, Accra Warriors and Cosmos Buffaloes have jumped atop the standings with 6 points each after securing two wins each. Warriors lead on goal difference of +26 to Buffaloes’ +22.

Dansoman Hurricanes follow next in 3rd place on 4 points, same as Legon Titans in 4th followed by Teshie Spartans and Ketu Lions who have a point each in 5th and 6th spots respectively.

Hapless Accra Sharks prop down the table on no points.

Rugby 7s League action returns with the Match Day 2 fixtures on April 7 at the same venue.
