Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has called on Ghanaians to throw their absolute weight behind the Black Stars ahead of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Egypt on Sunday.

Avram Grant’s outfit play as guests to the Pharaohs at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on matchday two of the group stage.

The Black Stars are still caught up in a frantic mission to win back the love of Ghanaians following their 2014 World Cup debacle.

“They [Black Stars] need our support, and we have to put everything behind us and support them,” Johnson told Goal.

“We should not still be thinking about what happened in the past. The problems were not entirely their fault. If authorities were dealing with them in the right way, I don’t think things would have gone that far.

“It’s normal for people [Ghanaians] to hit out when they feel let down. But when they are going out there and people are still holding grudges and saying things, it’s a very huge thing.

“Let’s support them because that is all we have now. If we support them and they don’t get a good result, then we can do whatever we want to do to them.

“We should also be putting pressure on authorities to do the right thing.”

Ghana sit third in Group E following a goalless draw with Uganda on matchday one last month.

Should the Black Stars fall in Egypt they would be trailing the Pharaohs by five points.

Johnson represented Ghana at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments between 1994 and 2000.
