Sammy Adjei must bow out

Tue, 6 Dec 2011 Source: Raymond Yeboah

It is very true that, goalkeeper Sammy Adjei, if not for his fault for the second goal in last Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Liberty Professional in the Glo Ghana Premier League, was doing well for Accra Hearts of Oak in the post but this performance alone to me cannot grant him a place in the Black Stars set up.

The Sammy Adjei l knew from 2000 era has faded out and there is the need for him to give way for young goalies to take over. It is not a matter of sympathy here, l am referring to his statement “It was my love for the national team that made me lose my position with my club as they warned me not to come for a particular international match and I disobeyed them. That is where my woes started.”

We are talking about future tournaments like the FIFA World Cup where we need young goalkeepers for the 2014 mundial. We should look at the rebuilding exercise that the football power houses are doing for the upcoming tournament. Countries like Germany are parading young squads for Euro 2012. Brazil, despite the great performance of their number one goalkeeper Julio Cesar always gives chance to younger goalkeepers like Neto (Fiorentina) and Diego Alves (Valencia) in order to get the required age for the World Cup they are hosting.

l even prefer that we don't make the upcoming 2012 Nations Cup tournament our prime target of annexing the trophy but to access our young players for the purpose of the 2014 World Cup because winning the African Nations Cup is no more news for Ghana. Youngsters like Ernest Sowah and Daniel Agyei are the two current goalkeepers Goran Stevanovic has to groom for the World Cup.

Danial Agyei has proven beyond reasonable doubt on two occasions that he is a tournament goalkeeper when he won U-20 Africa and World Cup and also won All Africa Games gold with the Meteors. Ernest Sowah on the other hand led Berekum Chelsea to their maiden league trophy and you could see that not only are they young, but they are tasty for success as well. So Sammy Adjei and Kalipo should give them a break to also demonstrate their God given talent.

l give this biblical quotation to Sammy Adjei and Richard Kingson; Ecclesiastes 3:7, “A time to keep quiet and a time to speak,” as affirmation that, their time of speaking is gone so they should remain silent and shut up for the younger generations to take over the mantle.

l congratulate both goalies for serving their quota to this nation. In fact they were the best in their days but for now Ghana needs to move on. We shouldn't turn this article as debate of an insult to the writer, but rather look at the context and the facts involved. Thanks very much.
