Team Senegal has beaten giants Nigeria, Cameroon and host nation Ghana to win the 7th Africa Zone 2 Swimming and Open Water Championship held at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
After three days of intense swimming competition which started on Thursday, 5 March 2020 in Accra, the Senegalese emerged champions after amassing the highest number of medals although Ghana's Abeiku Jackson won the biggest race of the day earning him an automatic qualification to the Olympics Games in Tokyo.
At the end of the three-day event, Senegal topped the medals table with 21 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze totalling 49 medals.
Nigeria was second with 9 gold medals, 13 silver and 9 bronze adding up to 31 medals, while Ghana occupied the third spot with 4 gold, 8 silver and 16 bronze medals making 28 medals.
Mali came in fourth with 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze making 7 medals, while Cameroon accrued 2 gold, 3 silver, and no bronze making 5 medals, they chalked the fifth position.
Niger occupied the sixth position with no gold, no silver but one bronze.
The event has seen an improvement in the performances of the zone’s swimmers as records have been broken and bettered.
Ghana’s Abeiku Gyekye Jackson broke his own 2018 record of the Africa Zone 2 Championship and set a new one.
All the other 12 competing countries will be returning home with a medal.
